More Details About the Fort Hood Attack

Officer describes firefight that downed Hasan

quote:
Seconds after Todd arrived on the scene, he said he saw a calm-looking Hasan, his gun drawn and his fingers pointing at people. "He was firing at people as they were trying to run and hide," Todd told The Associated Press Saturday. That's when Todd, a retired soldier who now works as a civilian police officer at Fort Hood, said he shouted at Hasan. "I told him stop and drop your weapons. I identified myself as police and he turned and fired a couple of rounds at me. I didn't hear him say a word ... he just turned and fired."

Gun Shy shakes his head. What kind of rules of engagement create a situation where you must first order an active shooter to drop his weapon? As soon as Hasan was identified as an armed threat attacking the troops it was time for the officer to discharge his firearm immediately. There was plenty of time to ask questions later in my opinion. It seems that our warriors have been handcuffed by ROE based on political correctness these days.

As a side note, it appears that both officers were using a 9mm sidearm. With the correct shot placement a 9mm may be effective, but who says that you can get correct shot placement in this type of engagement.

I will leave the readers with a few quotes from former Marine Lt Colonel Jeff Cooper:

"The 9mm Parabellum cartridge cannot be considered a reliable fight stopper--with any load. I have three recent cases of multiple torso wounds (four hits, four hits and seven hits) that did not shut the subject down, and each was with a different load."

"The .40 is for people who are ashamed to carry the 9mm, but cannot handle the .45"
