Police Trying To Shoot Robbery Suspect Hit Toddler

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Officials say Jacksonville police officers accidentally shot a toddler while trying to shoot a robbery suspect.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reports that a masked man carrying a .357 revolver ran out of a Wachovia bank Friday afternoon and forced his way into a car parked in a Wendy's parking lot. A woman, a boy and a girl were in the car, and the man began to drive off after an officer fired a shotgun at him.

As the man drove away, four or five other officers responding to the scene fired at the vehicle.

Officers killed the suspect, who has not been identified. The woman and the 2-year-old boy were both hit, but the girl was not.

The sheriff's office reports that the boy was alive but badly injured.
